Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay - Everest 1953
On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first human beings to conquer Mount Everest - Chomolungma, to its people — at 29,028 ft. the highest place on earth.
After the Everest expedition Edmund Hillary devoted all of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan trust, which he founded and to which he had given much of his time and energy. Through his efforts he had succeeded in building many schools and hospitals in this region of the Himalayas. He was the Honorary President of the American Himalayan Foundation, a United States non-profit body that helps improve the ecology and living condition in the Himalayas.
Edmund Hillary died on January 11, 2008
